What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely recognized medical metric used to estimate a person's body fat based on their height and weight. Calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters ($BMI = kg/m^2$), it offers a quick way to screen for potential weight-related health conditions.

While BMI does not measure body composition (fat vs. muscle) directly, it is highly useful for classifying weight status into general categories: Underweight (BMI < 18.5), Normal weight (18.5–24.9), Overweight (25–29.9), and Obese (30 or higher). This classification helps health professionals identify individuals who may benefit from weight management support.

How to Use & Interpret BMI Results

  • 1

    Select Unit System

Toggle between Metric (kilograms and centimeters) or Imperial (pounds and feet/inches) input styles.

  • 2

    Input Weight & Height

Drag the sliders or enter your numbers directly. Accurate height and weight are critical for an exact BMI score.

  • 3

    Check the Classification Index

View where your indicator line settles on the colored range: blue is underweight, green is normal, orange is overweight, and red is obese.

  • 4

    Understand the Limitations

Keep in mind that BMI can overestimate body fat in athletes with high muscle mass and underestimate fat in elderly individuals who have lost muscle.
